Something Important I learned from Dad.
I recently left this comment on one of my friends' blogs and I read over it and thought that it really is important information for people of all sexes, ages, races, colors, etc., etc., to see, and thought that I really shouldn't hide it in the comment section of a blog.
The bank account analogy is the most important advice I could give anyone.
I use it on a regular basis and find that it is tremendously effective and I use it to build, as well as heal, every positive relationship that I have...
"All I can say is that your life is in your hands, you are the only one that can change your situation. So get off your duff and get to changing what makes you unhappy.
Analyze the situations and change the things that make you unhappy into situations that you can either deal with in a better way, or even situations that make you happy...you certainly aren't making yourself more happy by wallowing in your own pity and sorrow...
Sorry if it seems harsh, but it's tough love.
Don't let ANYONE tell you how happy YOU should (or shouldn't) be for ANY REASON. Be independent and be happy for yourself. Make and create situations that make you happy and walk away from the ones that dont, and if you can't walk away from them, find ways to make them better.
Don't play the victim, be the person that makes everyone else around you better, and your situation will improve.
Happiness is a two way street, you wont be happy if the people around you aren't and you they wont be happy around you if you aren't happy yourself.
Lots of people don't realize this and create never ending circles of unhappiness because they can't seem to find the right ways to make the people closest to them happy. Just take the long term view, and just say no to short term fixes.
Everyone has emotional bank accounts. If you ever take more than you give, you will be overdrawn with them, and they will stop doing business with you (in this case, stop associating with you or being your friend, or even your significant other).
Learn to use this idea and build (deposit into) relationships that become fruitful, and much more useful as well, as the more that you do for others, the more willing they are willing to do for you without you asking them to (bigger bank accounts are always better!).
Just take some time to take a hard look at what you've been doing and saying to people and how they react. Soon you'll be finding the things that make them upset at you as well as happy with you.
Just learn to do the things that make other people happy more often and your 'bank accounts' will begin to grow, they will be more happy with you, and consequently you more happy with them.
Just one piece of advice about this that I've had trouble with: Just because there is 'money in the bank' doesn't mean you can withdraw. This creates a badly volatile relationship that doesn't produce no matter how big the deposit you put into it; this is especially true with relationships between men and women.
This is the best advice I can give anyone. Take it and use it wisely."
